Our story

Our mission: No cats living on the streets of Sunset Park, Brooklyn.

Sunset Park Cats is a 501(c)(3) organization focused on reducing the population of feral, stray, and homeless cats on the streets of Sunset Park, Brooklyn.

Sunset Park Cats was formed in 2019 in response to the crisis of homeless cats living on the streets, in the back alleys and in the backyards of Sunset Park. In July 2019 we discovered an unmanaged colony of 30+ cats living in one alley, and began working to trap-neuter-return (TNR) them. We transformed this original colony and still manage it to this day. We began exploring other areas of the neighborhood and found that the cat overpopulation crisis could be seen on almost every block in Sunset Park. We have rescued cats and kittens and worked on TNR projects in many areas of the neighborhood.

Our main approach is TNR, which is the most humane practice to stop the breeding cycle and reduce the feral cat population. Friendly cats and kittens that we rescue are taken into our fostering and adoption program.

Since 2019 we have TNR’d over 300 feral cats, and rescued and adopted out over 150 friendly cats and kittens.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

There are some cats in my backyard or on my street that need help. Can you come trap them?

If you would like to make a rescue request, please fill out our request for support form.

Some important things to note: We are a very small organization and do not have the resources to take on every rescue project. Having you volunteer to get involved in the project greatly increases our reach and our ability to provide help to more cats. For that reason, we strongly prioritize requests from individuals who are willing to take the TNR class and help with the work of trapping.

We are a local organization and we are only able to take requests in the neighborhood of Sunset Park, Brooklyn.

I took a cat in off the street and now I’m not sure what to do. Can you take the cat?

Unfortunately we are not able to take in cats or surrendered pets from the public. We are not a shelter and our capacity is very limited. If you find a friendly cat you can contact Animal Care Centers of NYC.

Which areas do you operate in?

We exclusively operate in the neighborhood of Sunset Park, Brooklyn, New York City. We are unable to take on projects or rescue requests that are outside of this area.

How can I learn to do trap-neuter-return (TNR) or rescue?

You can take the TNR course through Neighborhood Cats.

I took the TNR class. Can you help me in my first rescue or trapping project?

We are happy to support you in any way that we can if you are in Sunset Park, have taken the TNR class, and are interested in learning how to help the cats on your block. Please fill out our request for support form to get started.
